Community Assembly and Landscape Ecology

Beth Brand

I joined the Cale lab in 2021 as a Master’s student on the Ecology, Evolution and Conservation course at Imperial College.

My  project involves designing a plan for potential woodland expansion and creation of new woodland habitat in the Cotswolds AONB, UK.  The project is run in collaboration with the Waring lab, based here at Imperial, and the Cotswolds Natural Landscape Trust. I will use an integrated approach spatial mapping in ArcGIS to identify optimal areas for woodland expansion that bring most benefit to carbon capture; minimal distrubance to existing protected grassland habitat; support native biodiversity; and remain inkeeping with the cultural character of the landscape.

The results will be used as part of long-term Nature Recovery plan to increase forest cover across the UK and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
